What is SSI?
SSI provides payments to individuals with limited income and resources who are 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability, including children with disabilities, according to the SSA website. For adults, SSI is typically for those earning no more than $1,971 per month from work.
If you believe you may be eligible for SSI, a new, simplified application process is expected to launch later this year, making it easier for Americans to apply for benefits.
Some Social Security recipients might notice an extra check in November, but there's no need to worry—it's all part of the regular payment schedule. Those receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see three payments this month: two SSI checks and their usual Social Security payment.
This happens due to a quirk in the calendar. SSI benefits are typically distributed on the first business day of each month. Since Dec. 1 falls on a Sunday this year, December's SSI payment will be issued early, on Friday, Nov. 29. As a result, SSI recipients will not receive a payment in December, similar to what happened in August when they received two payments but none in September.
Looking ahead, this calendar anomaly will happen again in 2025. For instance, the January 2025 SSI payment will be made on Dec. 31, 2024, followed by February's payment on Jan. 31, 2025. This pattern means SSI beneficiaries will receive no payment in March 2025, and in May, they'll get two payments but none in June.
